Forever to Print
My iMac G5, using Acrobat 5.0.5, OS 10.4.8 and a HP 1200se LaserJet printer (black & white), is inordinately slow in printing PDF documents. The printer took three hours to print 43 B&W pages today (I kid you not). My "slow" color printer HP DeskJJet 5650 would take 45 minutes for the same job. I am aware that HP LaerJet printers have more than their share of quirks and incompatibilities.
Would upgrading to Acrobat 8 ($159) be of any help?

Re: Forever to Print
Gordon,
See how long it takes using Reader 8 or Preview. If it takes the same
amount of time, the problem is the printer and/or printer driver.

With Preview, it is a 20 minute job.
I have been down this road before with other applications. All arrows point to the application as the cause of glitches in the printing. But, in the end it is always a bug in the LaserJet. I guess I can just use Preview to print and continue to use Acrobat 5.0.5 to create. Thanks for reminding me to use Preview.

For 43 black and white pages? That doesn't sound right either.

That 20 minutes was just an estimate. But, an accurate one. Actual Preview printing time was 18 minutes.
The printing speed on the 1200se was never what it was billed as: 4 sec/pg. Although non-PDF printing is not nearly as slow as PDF.
I do have some feel for what is fast printing. I also now have a Brother 3-in-one I use only for faxes and copies. It makes fast copies, probably close to 4 sec/pg (in bunches). Maybe I should connect it to my computer for PDF printing.

Re: Forever to Print
I hate to say it but it appears that the HP printer drivers are lousy. If you do a search for printing problems in the Acrobat, InDesign or Illustrator, you'll probably find more HP printing problems than all other printers combined!

Re: Forever to Print
Steve,
While I agree with you about the quality of HP printers. The number of
complaints can be misleading, it is quite possible that HP sells more
printers than anyone else. I know at my school people are only allowed
to purchase HP :-(

Re: Forever to Print
I haven't had experience with Laser printers from HP. But their inkjets are top notch. I've had Three printers since owning Mac computers (first was SE/30 bought new) The first was an Apple Imagewriter II. The second was a HP inkjet DJ 650c, the second is the one I am using now a DJ 990cse. My only reason for replacing the 650 was No drivers were available for OSX.

Re: Forever to Print
It's not the quality of the printers I'm talking about. It's the software.
There are surely a lot of Epson printers out there. Must be comparable with HP. But you just don't hear nearly the printing problems from them. I think the difference is better drivers.

Re: Forever to Print
I have to admit I've had my share of problems with HP printers and Adobe products.
My Epson 1280 chugs right along but, any time I've installed a new version of Reader/Acrobat/InDesign, I've always had to re-add the HP's.

Re: Forever to Print
For some reason hp and Adobe has always had a Yen/Yang relationship. Every time HP update a driver to fix a problem with Acrobat/Reader. The fix works until Adobe puts out a new update it breaks the driver update.
It almost appears that Adobe hates Hp's guts and and anything they can do to stick it to them gives Adobe pleasure. :)
It odd though that when the driver breaks its only Adobe products that are always affected.
I like HP inkjets as opposed to Epson because if there is a problem with the head, I throw away the cartridge get a new one. If a head goes bad in an Epson, you get a new printer. Also I simply don't have the room to use a Epson inkjet because The paper is loaded like a fax Machine. On HP you put the paper in a tray in front of the printer and the paper moves through the machine in a U shape and comes out in a Tray above where the blank paper is loaded. Plus on my 990cse I have automatic duplexing. To my knowledge on Epson the only way you can duplex is print one side flip pages over load back in the machine and print the other half.
