    Default FreeHand-Gradient (Repost)

    Hi,

I did a gradient (solid to thin) image in FreeHand. It looks good in screen. But when I print it by using my HP800Ps, the gradient is not smoothly printed. It printed as jagged line that act as boundary from one color to another. The gradient is not printed at all instead of several colors from light to heavy colors are printed.

Maybe it is something with printer profiles or something else. Please help....

    Thanks

    Dear Judy Arndt,

I'm not good at FreeHand and my printer. So I apologize if my question is not really weighted.

    What operating system?
    What version of FreeHand?
What is your printer resolution setting in the Document panel?

My OS is Windows 2000. And I'm using FreeHand10. About my printer's resolution I will inform you soon. I dont know about this.

Is your printer a PostScript printer? If so, are you using a Postscript
printer driver? Are you selecting the correct PPD for the printer?

Yes. My printer is a postscript printer. And I guess the driver is OK since it prints fine with other documents. And I will inform you about the half tone of my printer. I never check this before.

What do you mean when you say the gradient is from 'solid to thin'? Do you
mean from a color to a tint of the same color?

Yes. Let's say I'm printing a blue (from tint panel) gradient. The colors should be from heavy blue and becomes lighter and lighter untill it reaches white. But what I see in my printing is a heavy blue, then a lighter blue with line that separate these colors clearly. So it is not a smooth gradient. But very rough.

Did you use a transparency lens?

    What is this?

I hope you can tell me what is the problem. However, when I print it with my HP DeskJet 1120C, everything is fine. Only when I print with my HP DesignJet 800PS the problem arises.

    Thanks

It sounds like there aren't enough steps being generated in your
    gradient. Check your document resolution in the Page Inspector;
choosing 2540 dpi should make the gradients as smooth as possible.
Depending on the resolution of your printer, you may also need to use
a coarser halftone screen to get smooth transitions.
