freehand to illustrator

I'm trying to take a document with editable text from freehand mxa to
illustrator. When I export as freehand 8 I get an error from illustrator
10. When I export as ai, I get an error whenever there is text present.
(Even freehand wont open a document that it saved in this format). When I
copy as ai and paste into illustrator it crashes - pops out of memory, no
error report or anything.

I've tried doing it as an editable eps, that doesn't work either.

Is there a way?

It should work if you export out of Freehand as an AI file. Illustrator
should also be able to open an EPS file. Perhaps there are font issues
that are causing the crashing. What platform are you working on?
