Default Freehand to Illustrator Conversion advice

Recently, I noticed Illustrator 10 was able to open files from FH Clip Art
(the stuff on the CD these were in FH9 format) without any need to export as
AI/eps, but if I saved the files as FH11(not MXa), it was not able to.

I like the idea of not having to create a middleman file, but am confused:
What formats will AI 10 accept?

Is AI CS able to open FHMX docs?

When it IS necessary to export
-- which formats are best to use (my greatest concern is ability to easily
    modify the objects in AI)

-Is there any reason to save to an earlier version of AI?

    Thanks in advance,
    xandra

I believe Freehand MX came out after AI 10 did, so no - AI 10 wont be able to open those files.
