French Keyboard with compose function - How to use it ? - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

I got some French (I reckon) keyboard with Azerty layout and compose function built-in. But since I don't know how to use those functions including how to get in and out of the compose function and I don't understand what word means what in french, I cannot use the keyboard. Can you explain how I can use the keyboard ? Although the keys are marked as Azerty, it seems that the keyboard still responds as if it is marked as qwerty though. Default French Keyboard with compose function - How to use it ?

I got some French (I reckon) keyboard with Azerty layout and
compose function built-in. But since I don't know how to use
those functions including how to get in and out of the compose
function and I don't understand what word means what in french,
    I cannot use the keyboard.

Can you explain how I can use the keyboard ? Although the keys
are marked as Azerty, it seems that the keyboard still responds
as if it is marked as qwerty though.

But I cannot get out of the compose mode (probably because I don't
know how to get out of it) and somehow the keyboard repeats whatever
    key that I pressed last.

    Any idea ?
FYI, this keyboard has a standard ps2 connector and 108(!) keys..
but the keys are slightly different from usual PC keyboards both
in layout and markings partially because it is a French keyboard.

I disassembled it to see if there's anything that I can do to
'fix' this situation but the controller is z8614 and most likely
the function is hardcoded into its mask ROM..

Any idea ? Thanks for any help.

Hmm, how about doing a temp. trial first? See man loadkeys
Do you need to type French? See man kbd_mode ; man unicode_on

Do you need to type French? [In redhat] you'd want to look at
    man kbd_mode and man unicode_start
    to check ascii/unicode status.

Last time I looked the keyboard compose function doesn't work properly
in utf8 mode. Accented characters you enter directly should work.
The problem with the compose function is that the table in the kernel to
support the compose key is only 8 bit wide and thus can't store unicode
values above 255. The compose key then produces latin1 characters which
can't be displayed if your display is in unicode mode.
