Frrehand 9 to MX---YIKES! - Macromedia Freehand

I have been an avid fan and daily user of Freehand since 1990. Nowadays, I work on a tight budget and delayed for a long time upgrading my version 9. Just recently I purchased MX. To my HORROR when I opened it up for the first time, NOTHING was familiar! I mean what the Hell? All my familiarity with earlier versions seems useless, at first glace. Well, I bought a tutorial but I have been so busy I haven't had time to use it and get into MX. And NOW the news breaks that Freehand may soon be no more. ...

    Default Frrehand 9 to MX---YIKES!

I have been an avid fan and daily user of Freehand since 1990. Nowadays, I work
on a tight budget and delayed for a long time upgrading my version 9. Just
recently I purchased MX. To my HORROR when I opened it up for the first time,
NOTHING was familiar! I mean what the Hell? All my familiarity with earlier
versions seems useless, at first glace.

Well, I bought a tutorial but I have been so busy I haven't had time to use it
and get into MX. And NOW the news breaks that Freehand may soon be no more. So
I am asking myself, why go through the bother of learning MX when it may be
doomed to extinction. Wouldn't I be better served by turning to AI---and
FINALLY learning to be REALLY proficient in it?

    What do you folks think?

    Cheers,
    Tim

Actually, the news is that MM will be bought by Adobe. No one knows
precisely what that means for the future of FH. I don't expect an
announcement about FH for many months to come.

That's very hard to answer. The new behavior of group-level attributes takes
some time to get used to. It will really get in your way until you learn to
superselect and subselect your way around it. I consider myself quite
proficient in FHMX by now, and it still slows me down compared to FH9.

Do you urgently need some of the new features that FHMX has but FH9 does
    not?

Are you on Mac OS X? There are some major incompatibilities between FHMX and
the just-released Tiger OS 10.4. At this point, we don't know if this is
Apple's fault or MMs, or if we'll see a patch to fix the problems. If not,
it looks like OS 10.3.9 will be the end of the road for FHMX/Mac users.

    My suggestion...

Unless there is a compelling reason to use MX (You need features that
only MX offers, you need to be compatible with clients, etc., I would
stay with FH 9. Everything is probably going to change in the next year
so you will not be losing ground by staying with 9.

    Just my twin pence.
