FTP client(s) hang when listing files - Mac Networking

Hello, I am using OS 10.2.8 on a G4 Powerbook. I am trying to make an FTP connection to both secured (with username & password) and public FTP servers. I can connect to sites fine, but no matter what client I use (Fetch, Transmit, CaptianFTP, and some others), the site hangs and ultimately times out when it tries to list the files in the directory. I am connecting to sites I have successfully connected to before, so I don't understand what is going on. I do have the built in firewall activated, as well as the firewall on my Topcom ...

Default FTP client(s) hang when listing files

    Hello,

I am using OS 10.2.8 on a G4 Powerbook. I am trying to make an FTP
connection to both secured (with username & password) and public FTP
servers. I can connect to sites fine, but no matter what client I use
(Fetch, Transmit, CaptianFTP, and some others), the site hangs and
ultimately times out when it tries to list the files in the directory. I am
connecting to sites I have successfully connected to before, so I don't
    understand what is going on.

I do have the built in firewall activated, as well as the firewall on my
Topcom ADSL router. The ADSL is new, so I am not all that familiar with
    firewall issues.

Does anyone have a possible solution for me?

    Thanks!

I should note that I have the same problem if I try to download from an FTP
site via Explorer and Safari as well.

Do you have passive mode enabled? That's what you need to keep the
firewall from blocking incoming FTP traffic.

I had to turn the firewall on my router off, turn the Mac's own firewall on,
and set passive mode on (as you suggested. Thanks!), but now can connect
properly. What I don't understand is why if I reverse it (router firewall
on, Mac's off), but keep passive mode enabled, it doesn't work.

My ADSL-IP does provide info. for using a proxy and proxy port, but I
thought that was used only if someone wants to FTP to my computer (and I of
course allow it). Am I missing something here? Networking is new to me, so
    please bear with me.

    Thanks again for the tip!
