Default Further Adobe Pro 8 problems

Here are some further problems I have encountered with Acrobat, after upgrading from CS2 Design to CS3 Design Premium.

In addition to Acrobat 7 refusing to launch unless an administrator's password is typed in, now Safari will not open PDF files inline if Adobe Acrobat is the default PDF reader.

We also have a copy of Acrobat Pro 8.0.0 that keeps crashing. The icon appears, the arrow appears, but it crashes even before a splash screen appears. Well, how about updating the software. Great idea!

So I found the Acrobat updater at Adobe's website. Well, when I launch the updater, it asks which version of Acrobat to upgrade, and when I try and select Acrobat 8 to update, it refuses to select it, as if it doesn't exist (or it isn't Acrobat).

I then go through CS3's updater. It sees updates for programs like Camera RAW, Illustrator, Bridge, etc., but no updates for Acrobat Pro. Odd.... It seems like it just doesn't even see Acrobat is on the system.

I even went through the process of reinstalling just Acrobat. Still no luck, Acrobat 8 still crashes.

    Any help?

Continuing problems with printing in Acrobat 8....

I've managed to upgrade Acrobat 8 via the 8.1 -> 8.1.1 -> 8.1.2 route, which seems overly complicated, but I was able to upgrade the software.

However, we have one machine which will not print more than one page at a time in Acrobat 8, and on another machine, Acrobat 8 acts like it is printing, the printer icon appears in the Dock, but nothing gets printed. Printing the same PDF in Mac OS X's Preview works just fine, however.

Any suggestions on correcting these printing problems in Acrobat 8?

Acrobat 8 constantly crashed after we installed it. We re-installed and it still crashed: the icon appeared, the arrow appeared, and then it crashed a few seconds afterwards. We updated the software but still the same. Finally, my boss suggested this solution:

    1) Go to the upper right corner of your screen and click on the other "User" window. If you don't have one, create one.
    2) Launch Acrobat 8; then in the Menu, go to Help > Check for updates. A window might pop up stating the problem. Do the repairs it suggests.
    3) Do any updates still necessary, then quit out of Acrobat.
    4) Go back into your user window and launch Acrobat.

Our problem was in one of the preferences folders of my "User" had a file conflict. Not sure if this will work for you, but it solved our problem. The other "User" was cleaner since it wasn't worked with as much, so it didn't have any conflicts.

I tried going to another user and tried to print off a PDF. Acrobat 8 printed nothing. Preview had no problems printing the PDF.

I even tried to repair any problems, but Acrobat didn't find anything supposedly wrong. I might try uninstalling Acrobat 7 and see if that helps to clear things up at all.

I have had odd issues tied to domain users before. I create new local accounts and don't have the same issues. On Windows, I re-imaged a drive and reinstalled everything only to find the same issue still existed. If one account works, try copying (from the admin account) the Application Support folder for Acrobat from the working account to the non-working account. That solved my issue with Acrobat updates. Also, try to keep permissions in check. Incorrect permissions on the App Support folder or other folders have caused the updater to fail for me in the past.

I've encountered a couple of errors when trying to update the software. A Mac or two wouldn't even launch the updater (unless I went through the Terminal).

But one machine that was having nasty problems, I manually updated by downloading the Acrobat 8.1, 8.1.1, and 8.1.2 patch updaters and upgraded the software that way.

But with two other machines we have right now, on one, Acrobat won't print anything at all, even though it acts like it sent the job to the printer. On another machine, it will only print the first page. If I print the same PDF document from Preview, no problems!
