G5 Burning Cross-Platform CDs
First off, I want to thank everyone here for all their assistance.
Thankfully I haven't needed to ask an abundance of questions the last little
while because alot of my answers were given by people in prior posts over
the last several years. To all those people who diligently answer posts by
new users, thanks. Even though one person may have asked the questions, lots
more look up the answers at a later time.
We have created a cross-platform application, and I have been successfully
burning a CD on our new G5 that is working on both the Mac and the PC. I
have not used any special software (like Toast) or made any special request
for a hybrid CD - it has been working, I think, because a hybrid CD is the
default of the burning on the G5 in OS 10.3. In Mac Help it says that Mac
OS X creates a hybrid format that contains these filesystems: HFS+, ISO-9660
with Rock Ridge, and Joliet with Rock Ridge (that all means nothing to me!)
We need to get these CDs duplicated. The client has already contracted with
a company to do this work.
1. Do I need to go through a package like Toast in order to make a
cross-platform CD for duplication given that it sounds like OS 10.3 already
does what is required?
2. Do I need to ask the duplicating company to do something special when
duplicating our CD in order for it to be cross-platform? Do I need to
specify any of the above file systems? (Joiet, Rock Ridge, etc.)
Thanks!
Julia

Re: G5 Burning Cross-Platform CDs
Julia,
I haven't ever used the built in OS 10.3 software for burning hybrid
CDs...but if you burn a CD and it runs on all of your required platforms
then you should be okay. The duplicator should be fine, as long as they are
a 'real' duplicator...ie they actually create a glass master and stamp out
new CDs. Some smaller quantity duplicators will merely burn new CDs from
your copy...just as you could do yourself albeit they probably have more
burners to use then you. This, of course could screw up the Mac side of the
disk if they are using Windows software for the burning. So, just make sure
to specify to the duplicator that you need Mac/Windows CDs and make sure you
have that in writing.

Doug
