Hello Phil --

Some of the following steps you've probably done already, but I'll takeyou
through everything that I've done. Hopefully it will help. I also have an
enclosure powered by a Genesys Logic device - mine says AVIO (read:VAIO;-) on
the case.

I have a 12GB HD poached from a half dead laptop installed inside it with a
single primary partition formatted with ext2.

These instructions assume you have no other SCSI disks in your system (CDROMs
don't count). FYI, I run RedHat 8.0.

1. Check the kernel to make sure there is support for the following:

- SCSI disk support
- SCSI generic support
- USB Mass Storage support

2. check /dev for these entries:

brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 0 Aug 31 2002 /dev/sda
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 1 Aug 31 2002 /dev/sda1

3. Make an entry in /etc/fstab like this:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/spare ext2 noauto,user 0 0

4. type "cdrecord -scanbus" OR "cdrdao scanbus". You should get an output like this:
(my USB disk is the Toshiba MK1214GAP)
