How do you get rid of the faint box that floats around when you click on an object and move it? i have looked through preferences but can't seem to find hoiw to turn this off. I hate this feature! I know what I have selected I don't need this in the visual field.

If you're using Illustrator 10, then it's a bug.

I use version 10 also and have noticed the faint box around moving selection. Hate it also. Do we know it's a bug just because someone says it is? What are you basing your statement on, Chelan? It seems like a "feature" to me. Is there a fix or setting? Hello, Adobe. I don't like bounding boxes either.

The fix or setting is to upgrade to CS. :)

No, this gray box is not the bounding box. It's a bug and it's been acknowledged by Adobe a long long time ago. The cure is to either try to ignore it (it's annoying but harmless) or upgrade to CS.

I am on Mac OS 10.2.8, version 10 of Illustrator. I have "Show Bounding Box" turned off. I did not have this problem until 10.

If you click-drag the object the you will see it very close to the edge of the object. Where it gets interesting, is when you drag with the shift key down, if drag your object sideways and bring the cursor down you can actually drag the faint box away from the object.

It is not entirely harmless, besides being visually in the way, it has a tendency to interfere with Snap to Point when you have the cursor tolerance set higher and you are at larger zoom levels. I am finding that when I zoom in on the object I have placed it is not where should be but the same distance as the box! In other words it is snapping to the corner of the faint box.

If this is a bug and the only remedy is purchasing a new version of Illustrator then I am going to have a problem with that. I don't think this is small, Illustrator is a visual design program, the emphasis being on visual.

It is this kind of problem and the attitude that I should buy a new version that makes me consider more and more that I should take these issues to the authorities for consumer fraud.

When we shipped Illustrator 10, it was a bug in the way that OS X handles drag and drop. Apple acknowledged to us that it was their problem, but they were unable to fix it before we were to ship AI 10. We decided that it was better to allow people to drag things around on the screen (albeit with the ugly bug) than to not allow them to do it at all. Apple has since fixed the bug by introducing a new way of doing things, and we have changed our code to takje advantage of this new method of doing things in AI CS. This is one of the reasons AI CS requires Jaguar whereas AI 10 would run on Panther.

Hope this explains things. We weren't happy with the compromise either.

Dave, thanks for your time and helpful explaination. Ahhhh, interface ain't it a joy!

I had one other question, you said,

This is one of the reasons AI CS requires Jaguar whereas AI 10 would run
on Panther.

Are you saying AI CS does not run on Panther? Or do you mean that AI now requires OS X and up?

Sorry, I am easily confused.
