    Hi Linda.

But in cases where the software issent holding a license for LZW compression
the end user is responsible to get a license.

The licensing requirement has expired. This is no longer an issue.

    Just found this on mm.com

    http://www.macromedia.com/support/general/ts/doents/gif_license.htm

But is this then also legal when i work for other people using my licensed
Macromedia products to produce gif files on their web site, or do they
actually have to buy a license for LZW.

When i produce gif files for another company using my licensed Macromedia
products and the company put these files up for sale or just give them away
    for free?

Is my license for the LZW bound to the gif files i produce using my licensed
Macromedia products so that no matter who recive, use or redistribute these
files can do so without the need to obtain a license them self?

The license only applied (when it was active) to manufacturers producing
software that creates GIF compressed images, not to the users of that
software. You are safe whatever you use.

"Examples of permissible uses of Macromedia software that do not require
a separate license from Unisys are:

Creating GIF files using Macromedia Fireworks, Flash, or FreeHand and
then posting those GIF files to a Web site.

These are just two examples of common questions Macromedia receives.
However, any licensed use of a Macromedia product that implements the
LZW algorithm is permissible without the need for you to obtain a patent
    license from Unisys."

    Folks:

See patent 4,558,302, issued in 1985 for information about the details.
Note that this patent hence all royalty requirements (in US only?) expired
    in 2002.
