I guess the simple answer is it depends on your hardware. Also, there is the matter of file corruption. It's always good to put your eggs in more than one basket. (But with a good backup scheme that may not be a major concern.)

Anyhow, there may be more specific answers pertaining to the optimal/maximum InDesign document size. Perhaps you should post the last question as a new topic.?

    I agree with Anders.
The alrger the documetn the slower it becomes to edit and the more vulnerable if something should happen to it.
Divide into multiple doucments. Do not work one large one if you want speed and flexibility. Very long doucments are slow to edit. Also with fast hardware.

    Guy,

I do a lot of book layout--and despite the shortcomings of the feature set--I use ID books and save my books per chapter. I usually do one chapter and get everyone's feedback on the design until it is as close to final as I can make it, and then I use it as a template for the rest of the chapters. It's true that I would like to see a book master page, but I do not find the lack of one as a reason not to use the book feature.

ID does get very slow when working with large documents. We do a magazine in house, and we've started splitting it up by article pages and combining it using a book. It really does save you from slow operation, corruption and other problems.

OT - I don't recall seeing this pairing before (see posts number 5 and
6): Nini, meet Nina. Nina, meet Nini.

Sorry Claudio, but I've been on these forums for awhile now, and this EXACT thought came into MY mind when I saw these 2 talking to each other. I do seem to recall that they may have spoken in a different thread before this.

The funny thing about it is I sometimes mistake the one for the other, for a split second.

Well, some people tend to call me Nina. That is not my name though ;)

Nini, If nothing else was achieved by Toms comment (or was it Tims ;-)
people must now notice that you are no Nina. Although I went to Sweden
last weekend picking bilberry and canoing, we actually never met.
A little OT comment now and then shouldn't offend anyone, as long it
isn't malicious, luckily we are no robots, I hope.
I probably lose many points due to lack of english (the last two for
instance), but that shouldn't prevent others.

Regular readers should know however, that you are the one with clever
answers, and I am the one with many questions which others may consider
    silly.

I sure prefer using the nice Book feature. Allthough it has
possibilities of development. I once used the feature on a larger
document which was ment to have a large part of interactivity, and I had
problems using the links in the final pdf, but it seemed that the issue
was that I had to finish the job on the same location and not move it on
my USB-key from home to work-server.

I did put my request-comment in "Feature Requests", and I keep learning
in this inspiring forum with a lot of clever people.

Nina, fortunately most people coming here are perfectly common human beings (there are exceptions!), so it's perfectly normal for them to slip in some personal comments. I wouldn't come in so frequently if I did not have this freedom, coming from a Latin culture where interpersonal relationships are of the utmost importance.

And don't be fooled; there are no silly questions, just silly answers. Also, any weeknesses with your English will get through without any problem. In my experience, most native English speakers value very highly the effort made by non native speakers to speak/write in their language, and ignore our blunders. With very, very few exceptions.

Finally, the fact that Nini is brilliant doesn't make you dumb.

And Nini, your site still shows that non smiling photo of yours I commented some time ago. And it still doesn't fit with my image of you. I know your life has not been easy by reading what you write about you, but I'm sure you smile quite a lot more than you frown … Could we share one of your smiles?

I suppose I have to get somebody to photograph me smiling to put on the site... I am seldom in the photos as I am normally the one taking them.

Thanks for clalling me brilliant ;) I most often don't feel like it though, but after almost 20 years of supporting and teaching pagelayout applications and other graphic applications (and the OS and the Mac and some other stuff) I hope I've picked up a thing or 2 to contribute to the forum (I've been on the mailing lists at Blueworld, now OmniPilot, for ever but only joined the forums last summer).

Nina - Bilberries (or blue-berries I would say) - hmm. Didn't know they were ready. Or that there were any this year. After this very warm and very dry summer (not over yet though they have promised rain for today and the upcoming week), I didn't think there were any. Or you were far up to the north. I am in the Stockholm area. Haven't seen any rain - except for very short moments - since some time in the beginning of the summer so the availability of berries is very scarse at most places. Most of the nature is dried up and yellow and brown. And it is not because of autumn.

As for the Book features. These absolutely need some additions and made easier to use too (at least when it comes to indexing through a book) plus synching of master pages between book-chapters. Nothing has really been done to the Book feature since it came around as far as I know. Needs some betterments, I agree.

English is not my first language either so some jokes are lost on me as well, but then I just ignore...;).

Nini, you don't have to tell us that you know how to use your applications; all too often you come out with some incredible tricks. However, what distinguishes you from the rest of us is your rare (meaning uncommon) gift to explain things in full detail, and in an extremely clear and at the same time concise way. It is only a handful of regulars who have this gift. I always enjoy your messages, and learn from them.

By the way, when I called you brilliant, my intention wasn't really praising you, although I think you are. I was trying to comfort Nina, who wrote

Regular readers should know however, that you are the one with clever
answers, and I am the one with many questions which others may consider
    silly.

and was really being unfair with herself. She is one of us, the majority; not one of the gifted few, and shouldn't feel at all badly for that. I don't.
