Gnome Panel Problem - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

We are tying out Linux as the OS on a computer that gets heavy use in our household. I don't know what was done but in my wife's account the Gnome panel is messed up. All that shows are the "foot" and the workspace icons. When application windows are minimized they do not show up on the panel. There seem to be indicators that the icons are being put on the panel but to the right of the visible screen. I am sure that some fundamental value has gone wrong. Any ideas of how to fix this....

Not always the best solution but...
One way is to delete all of the (.gnome) and (.gconf)
directories in the user account. Then logout and back in they
will be re-created but you will loose any tweaks you have done to
    the desktop.

Right click on an empty space on the panel and start adding stuff. You'll
want to at least add "Window list" from the "Utlility" submenu.
