On Thu, 13 Apr 2006, in the Usenet newsgroup alt.os.linux.ubuntu, in article

1. Google groups is first a news archiving system. Because it has so many>Why am I not able to finde this newsgroup in Google Groups
groups, it is possible to read and (in most cases) post to the groups that
it carries.
2. Google Groups is not Usenet.
3. Alternative groups (which really means those newsgroups not part of
the "Big Eight" hierarchy of comp.*, humanities.*, misc.*, news.*, rec.*,
sci.*, soc.*, and talk.*) are carried at the whim of the news administrator
of the particular news server. If that person wants to carry a group, and
there is a feed available from news peers, then it gets carried on that
server. If that person doesn't want to carry it - tough.
See the first two sections of the Usenet-News-HOWTO for more details.

There is a monthly posting to the newsgroups news.announce.newgroups,
news.groups, and news.lists.misc on the 15th of every month with a subject
"List of Big Eight Newsgroups". Most people are surprised to discover that
this only lists 2364 groups, while the average news server may have from
forty to one hundred thirty thousand newsgroups - some of which actually
have articles, and readers.
