Gradient Bug??
Hi ,
Trying to swap a pantone color in a gradient. I added a new Pantone Swatch in to my "swatches" palette and merged swatches. Gradations that have the Pantone color as screen values ie 60% in the gradations are ignored, everything goes to 100%. Is there a solution to this?
I had posted this under another topic with no response..this could potentially turn into a few sad faces in the studio..so I would really appreciate a work around/fix.
thx paul

Re: Gradient Bug??
I have no help to give you since it does and has always worked for me without incident.
Just to rule out the "D'oh!", do you have the gradient selected when you select the first spot swatch before merging the swatches?
I doubt this is the case because you would notice the element change before merging. Still had to ask though.

Re: Gradient Bug??
John,
If I have a gradient of 60% pantone blue to white. The new pantone swaps however the gradation is now 100% to white. Is there a step I am missing?
thx paulw

Re: Gradient Bug??
Paul, exactly how are you determining that the swatch that was 60% of PMS 1 is now 100% of PMS 2?

Re: Gradient Bug??
Doug,
Using the gradient pallette I create a simple gradient going from white on the left and make the gradient color on the right 60% of a Pantone color. Now say the client wants to change the Pantone color. When I merge the new Pantone color in the swatch pallette the gradient defaults to 100% not the 60% as originally set.
thx paulw

Re: Gradient Bug??
No special step to it. Even if I merge a tinted swatch to a solid, it will retain the tint value.
What version of Illustrator are you using. (my faded memory cannot remember anything past version 10)

Re: Gradient Bug??
Let's start with how the swatch on the right gets to be 60% of the PMS 1.
1. I click the swatch itself (on the Gradient palette's gradient ramp) then drag the Colors palette slider from 100% to 60%.
2. I deselect all (command-shift-A), then add my replacement PMS color (PMS 2) to my Swatches palette.
3. I select both new and old swatches in the Swatches palette (I select PMS 2 first, then shift-click PMS 1).
4. I reselect the object to which the gradient was applied, then click on the PMS 2 swatch that's now on the right side of the Gradient palette ramp. In the Colors palette, this swatch reads as 60% of PMS 2.
This is AICS, OSX 10.2.8

Re: Gradient Bug??
Doug,
I lost you at step 3...did you not have to merge the swatches at any time?

Re: Gradient Bug??
Jeez. I'm a dope. Step 3 should read:
3. I select both new and old swatches in the Swatches palette (I select PMS 2 first, then shift-click PMS 1) AND THEN CHOOSE MERGE SWATCHES FROM THE SWATCHES PALETTE FLYOUT MENU.
Sorry, Paul.

Re: Gradient Bug??
Apparantly it is a bug with Illustrator 10 that I was unaware of. It is fixed in CS.
(hell, I do not know how far the bug goes back or if the bug does go back0
The only suggestion I can offer is to manually merge the swatches.
Double click in swatch 2 to obtain cmyk makeup.
Delete swatch 2 (if you have other elements utilizing this swatch, then rename the swatch to something identifiable to merge later)
Double click swatch 1 and paste the name in the swatch and change the cmyk makeup to swatch 2 cmyk %.
If swatch 2 was not deleted, select swatch1 then command select swatch 2 and merge the swatches.
This is the best workaround I can offer you.

Re: Gradient Bug??
Thanks John and Doug,
I just tried it at home with Ai10.0 and had no luck.
Is CS my only option? I am going to try Ai8 and see what happens, maybe that will bail me out.
thx paul
