Default gradient fills and transparency, printing artboard

Hello, I have a couple of questions, and I'm reasonably new to Illusrator (10).
Can you make a gradient fill go from a solid colour to transparent and if so HOW?
    and
I have an image that is bigger than my artboard but it's still in the printable area, how do I make it print ONLY that which is on the artboard?
    Thanks in anticipation

    Hi, Becky.

About printing a specific area: look into Page Tiling and the Page tool. That's what defines the printable areas of your art. The Page tool is at the bottom of the Toolbox, in the same well with the Hand tool. The Page Tiling is set in the File>Document Properties dialog (Ctrl-Alt-P).

Now, about the transparent gradients: try searching the Forum for gradient transparency, there are loads of threads about the topic. As a matter of fact, here's a link to a thread that's about a dozen lines below yours: John Mensinger "colour to transparent gradient on the artboard" 5/7/04 8:00am </cgi-bin/webx?13@@.3bb3fd94/0>

    Cheers
    ;)
