Graphic styles - Adobe Illustrator Windows

Has anyone found a way to change (edit) the default graphic style? I've been looking for several days now. When I press the "D" key for example I don't want my default to be a white fill, 1 pt black line. And when you want to open a template, shouldn't the dialog box be filtered for just .ait files? Am I missing something? Otherwise what's the purpose of the command? Thanks D...

The Default style is editable as are other Styles. Draw an object with the attributes you want to be the default. AltDrag the object onto the Default style.

If you do this in the Startup template files, and save the change (best to make a backup copy first), your Default definition will be there when you start a new doent. Alternatively, now that CS has the ability to save docs as template files, you can create several sets of defaults for particular kinds of projects and just use New From Template when creating a new doc.

By "template" I assume you mean a file saved as "Illustrator Template (AIT)". This is not the same as a "Template" layer. A template file is one that opens as an untitled doent, so the first Save won't overwrite it. Useful for, say, an 8-up business card layout, so opening the template will give you a new doent with 95% of the work done. This is a pretty common feature of just about every program you use.

Thank you, James. This IS in the help file but it just doesn't specifically address the default style, it just says any graphic style. I guess the default IS "any style."

Scott, if you do a "new from template" choice, the dialog box that appears should just list your "template" (.ait) files (ie file type) exclusively. Afterall that's what you are after in choosing the command from the menu! It's just a pain when all other .ai files are mixed in IMHO.

Dan, well, you can always type in *.ait in the File Name box and hit Enter... I assume, they did it (if they did) to allow using *.ai files as templates too... Just a guess.
