Hard drive update - Mac Applications & Software

A "hard drive update" appeared on the software updates today. The description is a bit vague, saying only that some hard drives will have improved longevity with this firmware update. The page for this isn't yet indexed off of Apple's main download site, but it appears to be an OS-X version of this updater: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120230 As it turns out, the updater says I don't need it, so this is purely to satisfy curiosity, but does anyone here know what actual problem this firmware update fixes? -- David...

I downloaded the update and it did not find any drive in my 533DP that
needed firmware updating. I have a Quantum in my system. The only
report I have seen from someone who ran it and had a drive updated
was that they had an IBM drive. They did not say which model.
