    Default Harum-girl revisited

    Gents:

So it happened almost like this ...

I was giving my Ubuntu-box a rest ( after the 19th failure to enable
    MYSQL ) , and reading a bigdog <sci.phys> debate ( "Photons ... schmotons
..." ) on my trusty WinME system when ... up pops Harum Girl.

She's wearing spandex emblazoned with the M$ logo and a head-band which,
strangely enough reads ..."Free as in Beer" ... and she sez ....

"Oh allwise ruler, master of byte universes and all codes therein I
have prepared for you a NEW version of FIREFOX_... v-1.5.x and have taken
it upon my most unworthy self to Download, install and configure all
components. Forgive my despicable evening intrusion ... even tho it's 40
years since ya had QM and ya weren't so hot even then ... but if you give
me a finger-snap I'll enable every browser feature and plugin on this
scuzzball trash-for-code WinME box. That is, may-I your royal
    kiss-my-askness?"

    --SNAP--

Wapp!!! i'm back running ... Harum-gal vanishes, but her image is replaced
by a seething, spitting rectangular orange daemon who screams ....

" Oh miserly lord of all ports who has NOT re-purchased a Zone-Alarm
update in 2 years. I see ya still can't get that MYQL database to work on
the TOY OS. STUUUPID! Why do ya think they talk Swahelii?? Still stuck
with the v_1.0x Firefox version. HA! I bet it's got more holes than a
    tuna-melt.
Ya know I just try ta help oh most gushingly lame-fingered Posidon
of-the keyboard. Yet like any robot I must obey the firewalls
prime_directive ... no port will be open before its' time and no proggie
runs a tire-tread over my ask till the boss ( that's you ya cheapo commie
lusr ) say "holler". So ... does this or does this not NEW FireFox version
get WWW access? Speak up, man cause this work is all corporate donation
none a' that unusable free penguin crap from *nix!!!"

    --yes--

Ladeeda ... methinks M$ has nothing to fear.

Yes, I believe you did, and I respect that. I have not, and the convolved
page_instructions tell THAT story. My point ... not only did I NOT have to
install the new FireFox_1.5.x version on my 5-year-old WinME, but I
(truely) was prompted with a complet(ed) DLoad , configure and install.
And on top of that my ( 4 year old ) ZoneAlarm firewall auto-prompted for
(my) permissions. M$ vs Ubuntu/*nix ... compare < unsupported in each
case !> the service levels. Could one say that the M$ world wizards
treat users as "king-of-the-keyboard", while Ubuntu warlocks dole-out
misery to whom, "... the sluts of Sudan ...?"? YMMV

Those kindly, automagic software behaviors ( I have modeled with H.G. etc
) are old news on the M$ platform; sadly *nix chooses not to emulate these
expected ( can I say DEMANDED ?! ) behaviors even with it's own open
    source programs.

Insanely, the super_able *nix OS installer makes later pain
    inexplicable and even less tolerable.

Actually sounds to me like you are well trained by it being harder in M$
and found that to be one of the few easy experience. Modern Linux
distros, Mandrivia, Fedora, Suse, Ubuntu plus many others have the OS
upgrade EVERY program on the computer AUTOMAGICALLY. No user input is
needed. You can be asleep or go on vacation and when you come back you
will have the latest office suite, email app, web browser, text editor,
    music player, email server, whatever.

Not sure why Ubuntu has chosen to not update Firefox in the repositories
but that is the only case I can see being more difficult than in M$.

    Strange post though. Very strange.

The post was ironic, as my experience ( with WinME FFox ) happened only a
day after I told that silly H.G. story w.r.t. MYSQL-on-Ubuntu.

    Chuck:

Well, another 'point' for your-side. I've been getting lots of
"high-port-#" UDP(?) probes from several CHINANET addresses and decided to
    return the favor.
Without much hope I tried downloading NMAP from the Deb depository (
    <sudo ... apt-get install nmap> ... <apt-get install nmapFE> .

Amazingly not only did the program install, but the gui nmapFE appears in
one of the ADMIN desktop folders. No "assertable" icon, but it works, I
know cause I sent those CHINANET pals a bunch of 'postcards' .....!

Ofcourse ( with nmap & other apps ) there are still ROOT_usr/owner issues,
which on Ubuntu are as obscure to me as QFT.

One of the linux distro sites published a short interview with the guy
responsible for Ubuntu backports (for the life of me I can't remember
which site it was though). The interview directly addressed this point for
Breezy and earlier releases. IIRC, the upshot was that Firefox is not
backported because it is not "just" a browser in Ubuntu, but the rendering
engine is used for other things as well. The most significant example in
the interview on this point was that all Ubuntu and app help pages are
in HTML and the Firefox engine is used to render all of them. Hence,
backporting Firefox would require backporting and updating every single
package that has "help" pages. A monumental task.

This problem wouldn't seem to apply to Kubuntu however, since it uses
Konq for that, but since the two "flavors" of Ubuntu are tied together,
the repos don't offer Firefox for us either.
