Default Having a Problem Printing From InDesign. Advice Needed.

I am having a problem printing from InDesign to my HP DeskJet 1220C printer. The quality of the text is not that good. If I create a PDF file (press quality} from InDesign and then print the PDF, the quality of the text is better.

Is it common practice to create a PDF file first and then print the PDF? I was hoping to be able to print RGB composite proofs directly from InDesign and save the extra step.

I don't have this text quality problem when printing directly from Illustrator or Photoshop. I should also mention that I am using InDesign CS on a PC running Windows XP.

    Any advise?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Does this printer have PostScript drivers? By default, it does not. This is why you may be experiencing problems with output. The workaround for printing to a non-postscript printer has always been to create a PDF file and print that PDF file from Adobe Reader.

Since you do not have this problem in Illustrator, explore the print settings in InDesign. There may be a setting that you have missed.

If you mean that the black text looks grayish or "screened", then you
must make sure that your black text is RGB black and not C=0,M=0,Y=0,K=
    100 black.

Thanks for your responses. The text is black. It's jaggardy, for lack of a better word. It's not smooth looking.

I will have to experiment with the settings in InDesign and hopefully that will solve my problem.

Just a thought, could it be a question of what type of font is being used? Postscript vs. OpenType vs. True Type? If so, how can I tell in InDesign which type of font is being used?

    Thanks again,
    Jim
