Re: Having trouble adding Adobe PDF Printer
Do this. Its not elegant but will get you going it won't fix the underlying problem though.
Go to Print menu use your regular printer. In OSX.3.9 and lower choose printer Options and choose create Postscript File.
Save file to any location desired.
Then place either the icon of Distiller on the Dock or an Alias on the desktop.
Now find that .PS file and drag and drop eith on the alias or on the distiller icon in the dock.
At that time a Pdf will be created. I had the same trouble and was never able to correct it wit Acrobat 6.x only when I switched to Acrobat 7 did things get back to normal.
The dis advantage to using the method above is that you have a PostScript file to throw away when finished. But it works.

Re: Having trouble adding Adobe PDF Printer
pjonesCET,
Thank you so much!
I have a double dose of good news...first of all, I finally managed to get things to work. I dumped the Acrobat preferences files. I was finally able to manually add the Adobe PDF file back manually and it WORKED. If that didn't work I was going to download and try out using Printer Setup Repair because I read somewhere on the net that it would probably help to fix the problem as well. I was just determined to get this working by hook or by crook.
Second dose of good news...I then tried out your method as a backup plan to have ready...and it WORKED too!! This is wonderful!! Thank you so very much for your help...very very much appreciated!

Re: Having trouble adding Adobe PDF Printer
Glad I was of some help. I forgot to ad this for people using OSX.4 and up.
In OSX.4 this feature is hidden in the make pdf Button on the print menu. Someone mis-named the feature. Although its the same identical feature as in Printer Options > Create Postscript File, its named "Make Postscript from PDF" . Duh! Now talk about confusing the heck out of someone! :-)
It makes it appear that its converting to a Pdf then creating a PS file. Completely the reverse of what happens when you create a PDF to start with. When all its doing is saving the document in Postscript format.
Whomever; thought that up at apple needs to have his/her clock cleaned out.
