Default Having trouble selecting text in Illustrator CS

I'm having trouble selecting text in Illustrator CS. When selecting type with the type tool it selects nearby paths instead. When using the same files in Illustrator 10 I have no problem selecting the same text. Is there a preference or setting in Illustrator CS I can change to solve this problem?

Has anyone had a similar problem?

    Corey,

You first want to select the text you wish to modify with the Selection tool (black arrow). Once it's selected, now you can use the Type tool to drag select the characters you wish. If you use the Type tool first, then you're starting a new text path right over where you have clicked the instersion point, even if there is already text there.

One way to quickly do this is to choose your Type tool, then hold down the Control Key and while holding it down you'll see the Select tool. While it's there (Control down) click on the text, release Control and you'll now be able to drag select the characters in the existing text. To now start a new text path, just click Control again, the arrow appears. Click OFF any object or fill and release Control and Type tool is back and ready to start a new type path, or frame, as you wish.

(....I thought I posted it, but it seems like it got stuck somewhere in the Web)

Try checking the Preference > Type & Autotrace > Type Area Select (at least, that's where it is in AI9).

you can also grab the text object with the select tool and then double click the word character in the appearance palette.
