headphone recommendations
Greetings,
I am hoping that some of you frequent travelers can recommend a decent set
of headphones for music/DVD viewing on an airplane. Ideally a good mix of
portability and reasonable price would be great.
Many thanks!

These are the best noise isolation you can get, pretty much a frequency
independent 25-30 dB, whereas the active feedback noise cancelling
variety only cancel low frequencies. This is both good and bad, in that
you can still hear voices pretty clearly with the anti-sound variety. If
you want to retain some awareness of your surroundings, the anti-sound
variety are fine, although they aren't very good headphones.
If you want -total- isolation check out the etymotics. Shure makes a
similar product, Koss makes one called "the plug" and Sony also makes a
canal phone. However, if you want really great sound, the ety's are the
ones. See:
head-fi.org
headroom.headphone.com
or just google on etymotic. These aren't cheap; the budget line is $120,
the top is $250. Worth it, though. And they are very compact, no bigger
than the iPod ear buds and vastly better, in addition to the isolation.

and block out cabin/engine noise adequately - given the price and
portability.
If I am going to be staying at the destination for vacation, I also
have Grado external headphones (they were about $70), which are
excellent. They are somewhat unwieldy annd bulky for carry-on use.

have an immediate interest: Any recommendations for an upmarket
HEADPHONE FM RADIO?
* Over-the-top-of-the-head type headband (preferably two)
* Digital FM tuning, preferably with presets
* Cushioned/padded earphones, not just ear inserts
Sony has a model like this (the "something-55"), but it's gotten
critical user reviews.
