Help a newbie create a race track - Macromedia Director 3D

Hi, I've recently started trying to get to grips with 3d using Director MX. Having come from an HTML/ASP/Flash background it's a bit of a shock <no pun intended>! Default Help a newbie create a race track

    Hi,

I've recently started trying to get to grips with 3d using Director MX.
Having come from an HTML/ASP/Flash background it's a bit of a shock <no pun
    intended>!
I've set myself a project to get going - a racing game using 3DS Max for
modelling. No problems with creating my cars, buildings and the like and
using the Havok plugin I've found I can easily implement a car's driving
behaviour but I'm having some trouble creating a track to put it all onto.

I modelled a track using a spline object in max, outlined it and placed it
on a plane - looks fine. Problem is when I export it in w3d format the road
becomes a jagged mess. Setting the interpolation higher doesn't help. What
    am I doing wrong?

Also can anyone point me to tutorials on this type of game using
    Director/3ds Max?

    Thanks in advance,

    GP

Yeah I think my problem is just that - the track is too close to the ground
plane. If I just export the track with no ground it looks perfect. I'm
getting all sorts of wierdness when they're exported together, including the
track material flashing on and off, which I think is a zbuffer issue (from
what I've read online - zbuffer is something new to me - where can I read
    more regarding this?)

Is it possible to merge a spline and plane and then assign different
materials to parts of the resulting object (online examples?)? Would that
    help sort this problem?

I guess what I need here is a good tutorial on creating a multi material
mapped terrain for export to Director!

I'm still a baby in both 3DS Max and Director :( - Advice needed!

    Cheers,

    GP
