[HELP] AddressBook - Mac Applications & Software

I am trying to help one of my mac friends.. who ignored until now that backups are mandatory ! the addressbook.data file contains more than 2500 addresses but the addressbook app doesn't open it... I deleted the ABPerson.index in order to get a new one from the .data file at next opening... nothing happen I'll take any trick or hack or whatever (grass..) to solve this issue and recuperate these addresses.... thanks ek...

    This latter might help as you probably can pipe (using unix) the
    database to a text file...then maybe even eventually reimport it.

    I realize a typo mistake in my msg , shoulr read 250 address not 2500
    but it's still too much work
