Help! Experimenting copying and pasting elements from IND into AI
Hello there,
I have a strong preference for creating layouts in IND,
because that's what I'm used to.
I've received an order for an interpretation panel design by a signwriter,
who has asked for an Illustrator doc so he can see to minor tweaks at his end.
I've started experimenting with copying whole layouts from IND
and pasting them into a same size AI doc.
It actually seems to work!
Though the Illustrator doc I end up with is editable,
it seems to have different properties to one created directly in Illustrator.
So I'm wondering...
Do the programmes fully support this technique?
Are there any pros/ cons / potential problems I should know about?
Many thanks for any tips.
Gill

Re: Help! Experimenting copying and pastingelements from IND into AI
This works because InDesign's default format for copying to the Clipboard is PDF. That's what's being copied to Illustrator. Illustrator understands PDF well because that's its native format.
As we point out in Real World Adobe Creative Suite (which I wrote with Sandee Cohen, Peachpit Press): "Copying and pasting paths from InDesign into Illustrator creates a group that contains the paths for the artwork as well as a rectangular clipping path that was the bounding box of the the objects in InDesign. You may have to delete the clipping path to work with the file in lllustrator; doing so won't affect the artwork's appearance. This is a case where expanding the [Illustrator] Layers palette display can come in handy."

Handy? Illustrator's layers palette can be a hair saver!

Thank you Steve,
Couldn't hope for a better answer than that.
I'll look up your book on Amazon.

PS. I always have the layers palette expanded.
It's my favourite palette! Use it consistently throughout my work sesh on every file.
You can't group anything without your layers merging tho.
I keep spontaneously creating a group and then having to seperate the layers
again.
