Help! Failure to distill files and error message
Out of the blue, I am having problems making pdfs using Distiller 5. I make a postscript file from Quark 5, then open that file in Distiller to create pdf. All seems to be going fine as I watch the scroll bar, then suddenly I get an error message like this:
%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: distillsave ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
I have gone into each place Photoshop and Illustrator file, checked that all as as should be, cmyk not rgb etc: I have changed epss to tiffs and then sometimes distiller works. Yet sometimes I make only a type change to the same artwork and from the new postscript file, I have the same error message again. I wish the error mesage would give more information so I could troubleshoot.
I have deadlines to meet so this is a huge problem.
Any help appreciated.

Re: Help! Failure to distill files and error message
A common cause of this is Norton anti-virus. Try disabling it (some
have reported you have to uninstall; Norton do have a fix).

Re: Help! Failure to distill files and error message
Thanks Aandi.
I found on the FAQ that Norton anit virus was a problem, so wondered if the new version of Virex 7.5 that I just installed could be causing the same problem. So I trashed it and went back to Virex 7.2. Repaired disk permissions too. Tried distilling a postscript file that previously failed, and guess what, a pdf no problem!
I will try a few more times just in case but I hope that was the problem now fixed.
Virex 7.5 was only just released a few days ago, but Macafee have already posted known bugs that they are trying to fix, even asking people not to install until the bugs are fixed - seems this might be a new one.

Re: Help! Failure to distill files and error message
I spoke too soon.
Now get this error message on the same postscript file that worked 5 mins. ago. This time I was testing to make a press formatted pdf instead of screen
%%[ Error: Helvetica not found. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: distillsave ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
My fonts have not been touched, moved, changed or interfered with - Helvetica is where it always is.
What is going on???

Re: Help! Failure to distill files and error message
de Siem
Perhaps, but I dont think so as I had been running Virex 7.2 for months on my system without any problems. So going trashing the 7.5 and going back to 7.2 should be ok. Perhaps there was a bit of 7.5 that I missed, I will have to check. Plus I will reinstall Acrobat.
I seem to be getting the 2 above messages at random times. And then sometimes the distilling process works.
This is very frustrating. Anyone else found solutions or suggestions?

Re: Help! Failure to distill files and error message
I had same problem. You'll need to remove virex 7.5 if you have it. I removed it this morning and was able to distill again. My IT person emailed me an uninstall script which I also believe is available at mac.com if you have an account. Nothing posted on McAfee site (just checked)

Re: Help! Failure to distill files and error message
Gaye, the problems you have have only been associated with having anti-virus software installed.
In your case it's very likely some files from the newer version have been left over.

Re: Help! Failure to distill files and error message
Thanks everyone. Richard, sorry to hear you had the same problem, but Im very glad to know that trashing Virex 7.5 will fix it.
Unfortunately I dont have an account with .mac. Is there any where else I can get hold of this uninstall script? There are remnants of Virex that my system wont let me trash as it says they belong to "root". That high end technical stuff is way out of my knowledge
