Help ID2 file won't open in IDCS2

I am looking to see if anyone can help me with this. I've already searched the InDesign Macintosh forum, but have not found anything. I am trying to open an INDD file in IDCS2 that I originally created in ID2. Every time I try to open this file, it crashes IDCS2. The error report that generates says...

crash exception="Read Only Memory Exception"

The file opens up just fine in ID2, but as soon as I try to open it in IDCS2 - crash. I have tried a number of things to try and get this to work - all have been unsuccessful...
1) Open file in ID2 and 'Save As...'
2) Create new blank ID2 file and copy/paste pages and elements from original ID2 file, page by page, into new ID2 file. Quite time consuming (though less than starting from scratch)
3) Preflight new ID2 file and 'find/change' any TrueType and embedded fonts

As I mentioned, none of the above work and I'm running out of ideas on how to recreate this ID2 file in IDCS2 without having to start from scratch. I tried opening IDCS2 and ID2 simultaneously (which suprisingly worked), but it does not allow copy/paste from ID2 into IDCS2.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that might help my situation, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

I tried something else that was also unsuccessful. One of the things I wanted to get out of the old ID2 file was the swatches used. In IDCS2, I tried to 'Load Swatches...' from the old ID2 file - IDCS2 crashed on the attempt with the same error in the report. Hoping someone has an idea...

Sorry about that. Thus my problem. It opens flawlessly in ID2 and I really don't want to have to recreate the whole file. Any ideas? IDCS2 offers the export as INX, but ID2 doesn't have anything similar that I know of. Is there any way to get this into IDCS2, even if it's piecemeal?

Not that I know of, but I do know that I've seen reports of others
having problems with 2.0 files.

Perhaps Dov will stop by and be able to offer something.

Aj13,

The problem may be in only one or a few pages of the file. Try making a new file of only say the first page. If that one, or some other page opens in CS2, then there is hope. Then try copying only the first half. If it crashes, try the second half. The idea being to isolate the bad page or pages.

Have you tried breaking all the links for the images and then tried opening the file in indesign cs2?

I'm new to this forum and just reread all of the above messages. But I'm still unclear about one primary issue:

All of my files are on ID2. I'm ready to purchase/upgrade to IDCS2. Will I be able to open and edit my files? Does IDCS2 open ID2 files? Was it just AjPID's original files that were somehow "bad" that this did not work?

Kelly, so far since I've been using IDCS2, I've only had that one problem with an ID2 (the one I mentioned when I posted the first message). I have not had it happen on any of the other ID2 files that I opened.

Now, with that in mind, I also still have ID2 on my Mac, so I have a safety net - for now. I'm hoping to upgrade to a new Mac Pro at the end of the year. At that time I will not be installing ID2. So, to be on the safe side, I will need to open and save all of the ID2 files that I intend to reuse as IDCS2, just in case that problem comes up again. The problem seems to be rare, but not unheard of and without ID2 on your system, you have no alternative but to recreate from scratch. That is, unless someone else has any other ideas?

Unless something goes wrong, IDCS2 will open all ID2 files.

Thanks everyone. I feel more comfortable now knowing that IDCS2 was designed to generally open ID2 files - I'll keep the old version for awhile as well.
