Depends on his tastes. Graphics ? Database ? Games ?

BASIC, or RealBASIC (or Chipmunk BASIC)..At 12 he might be old enough to
learn C, but I don't think MacOS is a good platform to learn C since he
would have to learn all of the Toolbox and thats probably too much for
    him.

Java might also be a valid choice. Although perhaps starting him off
with BASIC would be a better idea, so he can learn basic programming
ideas such loops, recursion, variables, etc. before diving into more
    complexities.

I suppose at the end of the day the language isn't even so important as
the book or teacher he's going to learn it from. Perhaps sign him up for
an evening/weekend class at the community college? He would whiz through
    it with a good teacher.

    I'd suggest Chipmunk basic:

    http://www.nicholson.com/rhn/basic/

it's a simple language and all sorts of fun things (graphics, sprites,
sound, speech) are easy to get working.

Personally I think perl or php would be good languages to start him off with. Its easy to tell where a variable is as opposed to everything else. C would be too hard. Basic would work, but if he has a good enough teacher I'd skip the BASIC thing. Java is weird too ... i'd try to avoid that possibility.

    Hope this helps
