Althought I am no expert, here's how I got my sound card working. I am
running Mandrake 9.1, which I understand is somewhat simular to RedHat 9.

I ran the install program again. When the install progarm came to configure
hardware I selected the sound card. The driver Linux selected did not
work. The install program gave me three other drivers to choose from. I
picked one. Finished the install. And guess what, the card works playing
sounds from KDE. However I am still trying to get it to work with the cd
    player.

Hope this give you something to try while you wait for the experts to help.

    Later,

I've read alot of postings about this and it appears
that the driver works fine in og mode, but my
speakers are digital. If I plug headphones into the
sound card og/Digital output, it sounds fine.

The next question, which other people have posted before,
is how the hack do I get the digital output working?

    Dave,

I, too, have the same problem but with a different sound card and
driver. I have an Intel on board 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio. Driver is
    i810_audio.

Card is recognized on start up and plays a test sound through
sndconfig. Can even play CD's on my CD/R and DVD. However, no sound
in the GNOME environment nor playing games like TUX Racer.

Card works fine under WinXP and SUSE 8.1 environments on same machine.

Tried your suggested aumix command with no luck.

Any thoughts? I will provide further info if needed.

    Thanks

There is a GNOME mixer, named gmix IIRC. Try running it and set your
    volume levels.

Do you even have aumix on that system?

Check the permissions on /dev/dsp, this on a Slackware 9.0 system:

    [dev]# ls -l /dev/dsp
    crw-rw--w- 1 root sys 14, 3 Jul 18 1994 /dev/dsp

You may need to add your username to the group sys.

Sorry for the confusion. In addition to RH9, I'm running WinXP and
SUSE 8.1 on the same machine.

Did a chmod 777 /dev/dsp with no luck.

Still trying to figure it out.

    Thanks for your suggestions.
