    net etiquette/Newsgroup tip:

If you want to send the same message to more than one NG, CROSSPOST!

Some will argue that you not even crosspost do to the amount/type
of newsgroups that we have today.

As an example to post to "comp.os.linux.security", and
"comp.os.linux.hardware", use the following Newsgroups line:
    Newsgroups: comp.os.linux.security,comp.os.linux.hardware

    See http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/usenet/xpost.html

You conserve resources on NNTP servers, and other readers
see the follow up answers and do not have to provide the same answer.
It makes it much harder to keep track of a discussion.
Also, once a reader has "read" a message in one group, they do
not have to see it again unless someone has provided a follow up.

See answer given to this post in the redhat group you posted to.

One way is to use a rescue disk (my favorite is tomsrtbt, which can
be compiled under Windoze if need be) and mount the root filesystem
on the disk, editing out the current root entry in /etc/passwd.

The mount utilitiy is on the little Linux the rescue disk has created
    in memory (RAM)

    mount -t ext2 /dev/hda? mnt

Now reboot (after removing the rescue disk!) and you will be able to
just login by pressing enter when it asks for a password.

Been a while, but that seems right...

Boot into single-user mode, aka runlevel 1.
You will get a root prompt, and can then run passwd.

That doesn't work on a modern Debian. Maybe other distros.

You get the option to enter the root password for maintenance
or do Ctrl-d to start the normal login procedure.

I'm pretty sure he needs to use an emergency disk of one sort or
another, mount the root filesystem and edit the root entry in
    /etc/passwd to look like this:

    root::0:0:foo:/:/bin/bash

then umount the root filestystem, make sure the floppy has been
removed, and boot the hard disk.

Then he can just hit enter to login and run passwd to create a new
root passwd. He can, of course, do the same with other user accounts.

You aren't usually asked to login before you set the root password.

    At lilo prompt try

    linux root=/dev/hdaX init=/bin/sh

Substitute the appropriate device for /dev/hdaX.
