HELP! Radeon 7500, emachines 17" and ATI Radeon 7500 - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

I've recently installed RedHat 9 (after installing RedHat, switching to Mandrake, then back to RedHat) and I've got a really annoying problem going on. I have a 17" monitor which supports up to 1280x1024, but whenever I select a resolution above 640x480, the display stays at 640x480 and does an annoying "virtual desktop" scrolling thing. The weird thing is that when I plug in an older monitor (NEC MultiSync XV15) it works fine at the proper resolution. My theory is that, despite my monitor selection (the generic 1280x1024 setting) the Radeon is probing the monitor and deciding that it won't ...

Default HELP! Radeon 7500, emachines 17" and ATI Radeon 7500

I've recently installed RedHat 9 (after installing RedHat, switching
to Mandrake, then back to RedHat) and I've got a really annoying
problem going on. I have a 17" monitor which supports up to 1280x1024,
but whenever I select a resolution above 640x480, the display stays at
640x480 and does an annoying "virtual desktop" scrolling thing. The
weird thing is that when I plug in an older monitor (NEC MultiSync
XV15) it works fine at the proper resolution. My theory is that,
despite my monitor selection (the generic 1280x1024 setting) the
Radeon is probing the monitor and deciding that it won't support more
    than 640x480!
Any ideas on how to resolve this?
I'm not opposed to light hardware modifications...

    1. Read your XFree86 log. It is located in /var/log and it is probably named
XFree86.0.log. It will reveal what happened, and may offer some clues as to
    reolution.

    2. Look at your X configuration file, located at /etc/X11/XF86Config. See if
the resolution you want is even listed.

.... you could edit out the viewport option in the
/etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] file and set the modes to 1280x1024:
    ....
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 32
    Modes "1280x1024"
    EndSubSection

my suggestion is always to use 'xf86config' to configure
    the xfree system

Thanks! For some reason the mode line read "640x480". I set it to 1280x1024
and voila! Well, almost. I killed X and when it came back, my monitor came
up with "OUT OF RANGE" on the OSD. So I had to boot into a shell and teach
myself VI "the hard way"! Anyway, after adjusting the refresh-rate lines
in the config file, I got the display to work!

But now at 1280x1024 my monitor is making an awful, intermittent
high-pitched noise that everyone else claims they can't hear. Wonderful!
It never did this in Win98SE at 1280x1024. Is there a way to
    manually select the refresh rate?

I tried to run xf86config (from a root shell), but it tells me it's not a
valid command. Could you explain how to start it?

    Thanks for your help!
