there are contribute users and others working on the site too, so that's why i'm using checkin checkout, but why does it need to lock. what is the benefit and what does it do except keep me from editing it until i select unlock?

It is making sure dreamweaver goes to the REMOTE server, and gets the
Current file. AND-- that someone else isn't currently working on it.

If the files weren't locked, and you just edited your local copies and
uploaded them- you would be deleting any edits to those files made by other
    people.

this technote will explain the way it works-

Locking is kind of the point and benefit of check-in/check-out. Without locking, two users could edit a file at the same time, which would lose one of those two edits when both users then put the file back onto the server.

When 'checking out', the file on your system is compared with the file on the remote server to make sure that a) no one else has checked it out, and b) you have the most current version on your local system. If both are the case, the file on the server is then 'locked' so anyone who tries to check it out will know it's being edited. When it's checked back in, it's locked so you don't get it out of synch with the remove version. Hence, without locking, the scheme really wouldn't work well (if that summary was clear).

    Hope this is helpful...
