HELP!! Tiny lines appearing in final PDF file
I am creating a magazine insert for my client and am new to Illustrator 9.0. Everything is working well, except...
When I save the EPS file as a PDF to publish to the web, there are visible lines where the text box is. It's printing my "behind the scenes" guides or paths (not sure what it's called).
Take a look: www.trinityconsulting.biz/confident/ad.htm
Click the first image and see what I mean. It's around the text "Building Champions of Confidence".
Please HELP!
Deadline to get to the publication is Monday 17th.
Thanks!

Re: HELP!! Tiny lines appearing in final PDF file
I opened your PDF and I can see what you mean.
I have found this to be a good solution in Illus 10 and Indesign 2.2 (I now have CS) ...
Create a blank layer and lock it between the text and the image underneath. Move all text to the layer above the blank layer. This will also get rid of the problem of some of the text becoming bold over transparent areas as in the BACK sample. The technique of the blank layer seems to work very well.
Now when you convert to outlines and create the PDF it should work better. I noticed that you are only creating to PDF 4 - is there any reason that you can't use Acrobat PDF 5? Can your printer place Acrobat 5.5 at least?
I'll just change to "teacher mode" for this next bit ... on the other sample for the BACK, the text in the paragraph below "People are talking" needs to be adjusted. 2 of the lines are indented where they shouldn't be, and also the text is too close to the purple bar below. This spoils a good layout. There should always be an imaginary area of equal space around elements and on border areas for text elements. You also have double quotes before CWW ...
Cheers.

Re: HELP!! Tiny lines appearing in final PDF file
Sounds to me like Illustrator 9.0 is a faulty product. In the normal course of adding text, I shouldn't have to do double work to make it appear properly. Is there a patch to fix this?
Thanks for the "teaching notes". This is just the first draft and I intended to correct those items. My first concern is layout and color, then finally, the text.
I have never used a product that performs this poorly.
Thanks again.

Re: HELP!! Tiny lines appearing in final PDF file
On the Adobe PDF 4.0 -- it doesn't give me a choice of which version of PDF.
Ill 9.0:
I only have EPS, PDF and AI as my choices with no versions, so I don't know why it saves in the version it does.
I have Adobe Reader 6.0 on my PC.

Re: HELP!! Tiny lines appearing in final PDF file
I am new to Illustrator, is there something I'm missing in the final file preparation?
I simply place the artwork and text and then save.

Re: HELP!! Tiny lines appearing in final PDF file
All you have to do is create the blank layer and a layer on top. Then select text and move it into the top layer.* Layers are important in transparency and objects because when you save to PDF the text over images is rasterized in the process. The blank layer helps keep it all clean without the extra edges or shadows.
I've noticed in CS that this doesn't seem to happen as much, but I tell all my students to put text on a separate layer/s because they can then manipulate the images without affecting the text.
* When you select the text or object, show layers. You will see a little coloured square to the right of the layer name. Move that little box into the layer you wish it to be. Easy to move objects and text between layers without resetting anything.
Illustrator 9 only saves to Acrobat 4, which is ok but it doesn't save transparency.
I have found a workaround that in older versions of Illustrator of sending to older versions of Acrobat, that I select all the objects, export them to a PSD and replace the PSD instead of the objects. Then send to Acrobat. Remember to always save a copy of your original file first. By placing the PSD all transparency effects are kept. This is especially important if sending art to older printers who can't place the newer Acrobat versions as yet.
Good luck with your project.

Re: HELP!! Tiny lines appearing in final PDF file
Illustrator 9 does save to Acrobat 5 which does do transparency. It gives you the choice of the choice of 4 or 5.
