help with hosts.allow -hosts.deny - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Greatings, I'm having a little trouble understanding how those files work. I have tried looking at man hosts.allow, hosts.deny. I saw that you needed to put service:host So I put in hosts.allow sendmail:all ftpd:all httpd:all sshd:all vsftpd:all in hosts.deny all:all So it denies all, except services put in allow, right? There seems to be a flaw in my logic, maybe I am using the wrong names for services? I'm running Red Hat 9. And am a bit new to the world of linux. Thank you for any help possible, Mikey...

    Default help with hosts.allow -hosts.deny

    Greatings,

I'm having a little trouble understanding how those files work. I have tried
    looking at man hosts.allow, hosts.deny.

I saw that you needed to put service:host

    So I put in hosts.allow

    sendmail:all
    ftpd:all
    httpd:all
    sshd:all
    vsftpd:all

    in hosts.deny

    all:all

So it denies all, except services put in allow, right?

There seems to be a flaw in my logic, maybe I am using the wrong names for
services? I'm running Red Hat 9. And am a bit new to the world of linux.

Thank you for any help possible,
    Mikey

You have neglected to say what kind of trouble if any, you are having!

I am not sure if this matters but in "man hosts.allow" it is shown
    like so;

    httpd: ALL
    sshd: ALL
    vsftpd: ALL

Notice the space after the ":" and the use of caps. Again, I am not
sure if that matters but I have never done it any other way. If all
else fails, follow the instructions. Exactly!

You have to specify the programm for the service. I know for telnet
it is in.telnetd, so I think you should try to put an in. in front of
    the services.

Yes, but in general he has. His spelling of ALL is at fault!

The access control language supports explicit wildcards:

ALL The universal wildcard, always matches.

LOCAL Matches any host whose name does not contain a dot
    character.
    ...

And possibly he lacks for spaces, though man 5 hosts_access does not
    specify.

    Thank you Werner,

I will try that. I think I have a fair grasp about the host part, but it is
the service part that gives me trouble.

Thank you for taking the time to point me in a direction.

He said he read them. And in your text I see it also. He don't
understand whats in the manpages and asks us therefore.
