Default Help with tagged text/style tags for ID CS please

I'm trying to find information on how to format text properly so that style tags are read and applied properly in newly imported text.

I opened my PageMaker 6.5 documents in ID CS so that my old style tags get converted and I saved-as to create an ID document which worked just fine. Now I need to know how to edit my old tags in a text data file to import properly.

Twice per week I get data sent to me with a thousands of styles tags -- PageMaker liked to see <Head1> -- Quark liked @:Head1.....what does ID want to see?

I exported the newly converted PM file so that I could see what ID put in and when I copied those to my data file it imported everything as text.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Sounds like you need some header info in your tagged text file that tells ID what's coming up. It starts with "<ASCII-WIN>" (for example)
and goes on with some code that describes the paragraph and character sytles, etc. that follow.

If you export some text from ID as a tagged text document and open up the tagged text in Notepad, you'll see the type of info it uses.

As I recall (although it's been awhile) Quark and PM didn't need any more than the tags themselves in the document (I could be mistaken there).

In any case, if you have a bunch of PM docs with similar styles, you can set up a routine where you search for <HEAD1> and replace with <pstyle:HEAD1> (for example), and then paste your standardized intro code into the text file and import away . . . if that's useful for what you need to do.

There's a lengthy description of tagged text files somewhere on the ID CDs -- maybe in a "goodies" or "support" folder . . .

    Hi Corrina--

I have a script that can convert a PageMaker-style markup to an InDesign tagged text file--drop me a line directly (my email is under my user name) and I'll send it to you. If you like, you could send me an example file first--that way I could see if it works with the script.

It's also covered in "Real World Adobe InDesign CS"--as far as I know, that's the only place that discusses process of converting from PageMaker paragraph style tags to InDesign tagged text.

But the script is easier and quicker.<g>

    Thanks,

    Ole
