Help with weird Mail problem - Mac Networking

I've got a problem with Mail. I'm running Panther (10.3.0) on a brand new PB (G4, 1.25 GHz, 15"). My Mail program works just fine, sort of. I can send to other computers with no problem. And I can receive mail with no problems except one. 1) When I open a received message, the only items that appear are the delete, forward, reply, redirect, etc. icons in the message's menu bar. Default Help with weird Mail problem

I've got a problem with Mail.

    I'm running Panther (10.3.0) on a brand new PB (G4, 1.25 GHz, 15").
My Mail program works just fine, sort of. I can send to other
computers with no problem. And I can receive mail with no problems
    except one.

    1) When I open a received message, the only items that appear are the
delete, forward, reply, redirect, etc. icons in the message's menu
bar. There is no text to be seen in the message area, and there is no
    heading (To: From: etc.)

    2) The file copy of the message I sent appears the same way - no
text, no heading, just the usual icons in the message's menu bar.

    3) If I "Reply", "Forward," or "Redirect" one of these messages, the
text appears properly, in color and properly indented. As if by magic
    ....

I've reinstalled Panther, to no avail.

I've been using Mail for over a year on another computer, and never
    had this problem.

What in the world is going on here?? More importantly, what do I do
    to fix this??

A thousand thanks to anyone who can help me, or who can direct me
    towards somebody who could.

Did you uninstall some fonts just before the problem started?

Thanks for the reply - no I did not, and all the fonts are present.
Perhaps this will help - things worked okay until I tried to update to
10.3.3. The download failed (I use a modem, not having access to
DSL), and it was after that that the problem developed. When I say
that the download failed, I mean just that - there was an error in
transmission, and it never got to the point of installation.

I've not tried to download 10.3.3 again, but perhaps that's the
ticket, though I can't imagine how that could be ... I mean, a failed
download couldn't corrupt anything, could it? And if I was able to
reinstall 10.0.0 successfully ... shouldn't that have solved the
problem? And my other apps work fine.

By the way - I think your guess was pure genius, incorrect though it
might be (I changed fonts in my Mail Preferences, just to see if
Helvetica was corrupted, but to no avail).

    Again, thanks.
