Default Hi res PDF file sizes?

I'm trying to establish a PDF workflow with my main print supplier. Previously I created imposed sheets in Pagemaker, (now in the process of migrating to ID CS), with all gutters, bleeds, trim marks and colour bars, printed to eps file, then open the file in Illy, convert all text to outline and resave, then print proof from Illy. Clunky I know, but virtually bomb-proof, many, many jobs completed with never a problem.

Current job is an SRA2 sheet, 4 col process. The output EPS as described above is 199MB.

Create a press profiled PDF from the ID file and the file size is 53.2MB.

Distill the same (non EPS) file from PM6.52 with the same acrobat settings and it's 47.4MB.

Seems small to me, although both PDFs look OK, I haven't had them RIP'd yet.

Default Re: Hi res PDF file sizes?

Seems a reasonable size to me. Size how much you have on the page, but an A4 leaflet generally goes out at about 5MB when I produce a PDF for printing.

System I use is to print a ps file and then distill with Acrobat, using Pass4Press settings (an standard for the UK magazine industry)

Colin - thanks for your thoughts, the job is 2 double sided A4s, work and turn, there are a number of linked tiffs and eps files totalling 67MB, the imposed PM file is 11.5MB and the imposed ID file is 7.6MB.

The ID file was simply the PM file opened with minor tracking tweaks applied then exported to PDF.

Pass4Press settings? not come across these - which version of acrobat are you using? I'm on 5.
