Default Hi Res pdfs from Quark - resolution changing...help!

    Hi

I'm making hi-res pdfs from Quark by printing as a postcript file then running this through 'Press' settings in distiller. However, if I open the images from the resulting PDF in photoshop it tells me that they are around 200dpi rather than the 300dpi they were originally - whats happening, please help!

    Thanks

How and why are you doing it that way? Use the Preflight tool in Acrobat Pro instead.

The images are TIFFS. Im using the adobe pdf ppd.

They arent at 100% in Quark which is what I thought may cause the problem - an enlarged image might show as a lower resolution, I could understand that, however even the images that are reduced in Quark are showing as a lower resolution.

I'm checking them in photoshop as that is what the magazine who are running the add did. If I preflight in acrobat i still get odd numbers (however they show as PPI rather than DPI which is even more confusing!)

ps sorry for the double post... figured this one was a more useful subject heading!

looking at my images sizes, one is at 145% in Quark, and is showing as 206.9dpi in the PDF which kind of makes sense - 145% of 206 is about 300. The other image is at 50% though and is showing as 200dpi in the pdf... which doesn't make sense..!?

ok.. just set the reduced image to 100%, and low and behold it comes out in the PDF at 300dpi... so why on earth is it reducing the dpi when its set at 50% - you would have thought the dpi should have gone up to 450 using that logic...

this would be a complete pain if i have to resize all images before putting them into Quark....!

OK - as a test, please set the lpi to 175 and then re-make the PDF with
    reduced/enlarged images as before.

Ok.. coming back to this issue! I still havent solved it. I have found that if I use eps as the image type it works fine, so it seems to be a problem with TIFFs - I need to use tiffs though as I often colour up black and white ones in quark...

    Hi johnboyuk

XPress has the ability of downsampling images to the desired resolution based on the lpi/dpi settings. To avoid this you have to select the option "Full resolution TIFF output" (or something similar - I have a German version here)

Yes - As Peter noted, TIFFs will typically output at a maximum of double
the LPI resolution under the OUTPUT tab. If you set this to 175 and
ensure the FULL RESOLUTION TIFF OUTPUT is also selected in the OPTIONS
    tab - you're there ...
