    Default Highlight

Is there a way to select text and add a color highlight, like say, brown behind white text? I didn't see a highliter in the toolbox and I checked ID help, searched for highlight and the results weren't helpful.

In CS, you can use a custom underline to do this.

Highlight the text and then open the flyout menu on the character
palette. Everything you need is there.

    Got it working, thanks!
That was a clever work around but is there not an easier way? Should I create a nested style if I plan to use this frequently?

First step is to create a character style called highlight. Up to you if you then nest it in a paragaph style; depends how consistent the text is that you want to flag for this treatment.

Kind of a shame that you need to create a style just to highlight text. Someone please direct me to the link where the users wish list is.

    TIA

I think you'll find that there's no "Just" to higlighting text. Maybe in a crummy word processor, where users are complecent in letting the application make decisions for them, but not in inDesign.

If I'm using a highlight for text, I'll want to specify its thickness, colour, and position to ensure it centres around my font's Cap Height. If I could do that with just a button, I would be using a psychic computer.

Acrobat offers extremely limited control over highlighting. The purpose is not to produce a precise, controlled, and visually pleasing effect, but to simply indicate that the text is hightlighted. Typesetters and designers would need much better control than that, and that's why we arent' complaining about having it, and the need to use it.
