Ho to Add Downloadable .doc File to a Web Page?
Does anyone know how I use Dreamweaver (version 4 or version MX 2004) to add a
downloadable .doc (Microsoft Word) file to a web page? I do not want to
actually "publish" the .doc on a web page. I just want visitors to be able to
download it from my web page, and then they can open it (offline, preferrably).
Thanks for any help!

For future reference, please ask questions that not extension related in the Dreamweaver general group, as you'll get a larger audience:

Re: Ho to Add Downloadable .doc File to a Web Page?
Ciao Danilo,
thanks for your reply. Yes, I also realized right after I posted this that I
should have posted in the Dreamweaver "General" Forum, so I did that. I got
answers that are exactly the same as yours: upload the file, link to it. Just
want to make sure that: if I link to it, will the file remain strictly a
Microsoft Word file? Or, will it become a web page in HTML? The issue is: I
want users to read the file in Word, and I don't want the content of the .doc
file to send up indexed as a web page on the serach engines.
So, sorry if I sound dumb, but, is your reply still the same?
Thanks so much for y6our help!

A file doesn't change just because you upload it to a server. It will stay as a DOC file. As to being indexed, some search engines do search into other file types than HTML pages. For example, Google can index PDF and PPT files. I'd guess that they can index DOC files as well.> Ciao Danilo,

It is possible that you can prevent some search engines from indexing the file by using a robots.txt file ( http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/robots.html ) but probably the best way to stop search engines from indexing would be to zip the file up and link to the zip file. But then you're requiring your viewers to download the file, unzip it, and then open it up in word. An extra step, for sure, but depending on your requirements, maybe a necessary one.

Re: Ho to Add Downloadable .doc File to a Web Page?
Ciao Danilo,
thank you soooooooooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would not
have thought of the 'zip" file. I already knew about the 'robots.txt". I think
the zip file is the answer. Big hug over the internet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
