    Default Hoary or Breezy?

    Is there a way (like, say, '$uname -a' which will tell me if I have
    hoary hedgehog or breezy badger?

    I can never remember which it is I got. Pretty sure it's breezy!

    CTL + ALT + F1 - F6 will drop you to a terminal, should be right there.

    lsb_release -a

    Needs package lsb-release to be installed (I don't know if it is by
    default)

    $ man lsb_release
    [...] FSG lsb_release v1.4 prints certain LSB (Linux Standard Base) and
    Distribution information[...]

    $ lsb_release
    LSB Version: n/a
    Distributor ID: Ubuntu
    Description: Ubuntu (The Breezy Badger Release)
    Release: 5.10
