I want to make my own patterns, which I'd figured out how to do in 4.0, but every since I've used 9.0 I've not had success.

Bad luck. But you could have success if you read everything about patterns in the manual :-)

What I am after is a seamless fill of my pattern at 45 deg.
Another question was posted today that gives me the answer, thanks.
