hostname being set to random computer on network - Mac Networking

Does any one here know why that when pug into our ethernet network at work I get assigned a hostname from the network? It provieds me a name that is obviously supposed to be a different computer in the network. Any Ideas on how I can stop this from happening. I tried `hostname newhostname.domain.net` and `hostname newhostname` as root and neither worked. Thanks...

In a word: DHCP. It assigns an IP address, and the name follows
    automatically.

    How do you know this?

Go to Network Preferences, select Configure IPv4: Manually under
TCP/IP and set the IP address yourself.

However, DON'T EVEN THINK OF DOING THIS without the approval of the
network manager at your work! If he's set up DHCP, as it seems, it is
because he wants it to be used. People grabbing their own IP address
manually with no coordination is a recipe for chaos and disaster.
