how big can I print from 35mm 400 ASA negative? - Photography

I want to have a print done from a 35mm film, speed 400. The picture includes a pale blue sky, mid blue sea, waves breaking over rocks at the foot of a cliff, and the Butt of Lewis lighthouse What is the biggest I can go without it looking grainy? Can I get away with A2 size (594mm x 420mm)? Would grainyness have the effect of making the picture look like it's on canvass? To reply direct by email take out the "rubbish"....

It all depends on which 400 film you used. Some of the newer 400s have
    fine grain characteristics.

If you know anybody that has a color darkroom, have them rack the
enlarger up to 8X12, 11X14, and if possible, 16X20. Then print a
section on 4X6 paper at each size and look at the grain.

    Cheers.
Don't know how grainy Jessops own brand 400 film is!

You can print as big as you want - remember that if you're printing really
big, you'll need to stand further away from the print to view it properly
and in this way the effect of the grain is minimised - rather like looking
at a billboard poster close-up and looking at it from across the street.
