In the text field properties dialog box, click on the appearence tab.
Change the font size from to either auto OR an appropriately small size.

If you have Acrobat Pro 6 or 7, use the TouchUp text tool. Go to Tools > Advanced Editing > TouchUp Text. Highlight the text you want to edit, right - or Control - Click on the selection and choose "Properties" from the Context menu. In the "Text" tab you'll be able to change the text Size.

The TouchUp Text tool iss available in Acrobat 5.0, but not in Reader 5.

Ummm... The above information was for a simple text field. If you're in a form, there is a similar scenario.

I am in a form and it will not let me higlight the text that I want to edit. The only text I am allowed to highlight after clicking "touch up text" is the form's pre-filled out text. I am not allowed to do anything in the "yellow box", not even add text.

OK. Not my usual area so this workflow looks a little weird to me, but here is what I'm seeing. Use the Select Object Tool on the Advanced Editing Toolbar, go to Tools > Advanced editing > Select Object Tool. Click on the form field you want to edit. This lit up all of the form fields for me. Right - or Control - click on the form field you want to edit and select "Properties..." from the context menu. Click on the Appearance button, though the Appearance panel should be displayed by default. In the bottom half of the panel is an area where you can edit the Font size. Hope this helps.

Choose the text field tool and double click on the field in question.
You will see settings row towards the top of the dialog box. Click on
    Appearance.

I found the text field tool under advanced tools but it is subdued and I cannot select it.
