Don't worry; I solved the main problem.

I used the program to link to the Apple Web site for future
registration, then trashed the program and alias, pulled the plug,
restarted, option-emptied the trash, and when Norton Antivirus opened, I
allowed it to modify Register With Apple, which in turn allowed the
    program to be deleted.

Now I just have to find the friggin' serial number so I can register!
(God this upgrading is a pain!)

The serial number is on the back of your computer.

I was referring to the serial numbers relating to my computer's
operating system -- not the computer. You completely misunderstand my
    predicament.

No I don't. The OS _has_ no serial number. The program you are seeing
is the program that runs on a new Mac to invite the user to register
    it.
