Default how can I reporduce this effect

I have an effect created in After Effects that I want to reproduce in Flash.
An example of the video is here:
http://www.ericabrade.com/flash/example.html.

I've tried a few different things but nothing seems to work. It seems to
require a mask with a gradient and radom placement of the lines that reveal
and hide the image.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

It would be with masks over masked movie clips.

would you be able to elaborate a little bit? I've tried a few different
ways to make it work but nothing seems to match the original video close
enough. thanks!

It seems embedding the movie clip that you created in After Effects, even just
parts of it, and then proceeded to mask those you could perhaps achieve the
effect in the most resource friendly manner and still create interactivity.
What exactly have you tried so far?

the parts I'm having problems with are the effects over top of the video.
The black lines are particularly difficult. There are so many of them that
it seems inefficient to place each one individually. Also the makes has a
bit of a gradient to it. Is there a way I can have the lines duplicate the
line and place several instances randomly with actionscript (to make it look
like the video)? http://www.ericabrade.com/flash/example.html

As far as the video goes, I will just bring in the stills and motion tween
them.

i think this can be easily made in flash. u can play with images in flash.
tools u need : flash & photoshop

select proper images. give effects in photoshop [ like curves, brightness,
hue.. etc..]
then import those images in flash.
give motion tween, masking.... etc

rest all depends on ur experience in flash...
