The various alias creation routines created an AliasHandle, ie some data
that exists in memory, they don't write anything to disk. An actual finder
alias has the data from an AliasHandle as one of it's resource, as well as
a few other resources and stuff. I don't recall there being any API
    for
creating actual alias files, although you can probably work out what
    resources need to be there.

The only 'official/supported' way is to send an AppleEvent to the
    Finder to make the alias.

OTOH, the file format for an alias file hasn't changed since System 7
and if they did change it, alot of programs would break. IOW you can
create and save your own file with little compatibility risk. The file
is just resouce fork containing an 'alis' resource. You also need to
set the alias Finder bit and match the type and creator to the original
    file.
